Who’s behind the voice?
The first time I realised that different languages existed was when I started school in Wales. At home, I had absorbed English effortlessly, but stepping into a Welsh classroom, I discovered that words could have completely different shapes and sounds yet carry exactly the same meaning.
That revelation – that meaning exists independently of the words we use – has shaped how I approach every script since. The most important part of voice work isn’t saying the words as written; it’s transmitting meaning from script to listener. Growing up bilingual in English and Welsh taught me that words are just the vehicle; meaning is the driver.
From Stage to Page
Perhaps it was growing up in a country suffused with poetry and music, or maybe it was just my inner show-off that led me to train at Rose Bruford College, where I learned to hone my skills with language, merging the inherent musicality and rhythm of Welsh with the technical precision and elasticity of English with a goal to find the truth concealed in text.
Life sometimes takes you on detours and for me it led to corporate communications, working as a graphic designer and branding specialist for City-based financial firms. This experience taught me how to use text to convey business messages effectively. It also led me back to performance: when working on multimedia projects, I often found the voice samples we were using didn’t match the vision I had for the content. This inspired me to set up Gavin Duff Voiceover – where I could combine my technical voice skills with my understanding of business goals to bring true value as a London-based voice artist.
Bringing stories to life
Working on mindfulness projects sparked my curiosity about how voice can make people feel safe or motivated. This led me to train as a cognitive behavioural hypnotherapist, which opened my eyes to how profoundly voice affects our mental and emotional state.
My approach to voice work transformed as a result. It’s not just about delivering lines well – it’s about understanding the psychological impact of every choice I make. Whether it’s creating authority for corporate training, warmth for commercial campaigns, or therapeutic presence for wellness content, I now understand how voice shapes audience response.
